Smoking and Erectile Dysfunction
Erectile Dysfunction is the inability of a man to maintain an erection long enough to complete the full act of sexual intercourse. Numerous studies have linked smoking to problems with erectile dysfunction. Many lifestyle habits can effect erectile dysfunction. These range from being overweight to even diet, but smoking seems to be the biggest culprit that is preventable by changing one’s lifestyle.
What exactly is the connection with smoking and erectile dysfunction?
The scientific data indicates that men who smoke more than a pack of cigarettes a day have a 60% bigger chance of suffering from erectile dysfunction then men who don’t smoke. Even men who were smokers and stopped still had a 30% chance of having erectile dysfunction problems. Compare this to men who never smoked and you will see that they only have a 12% chance of having erectile dysfunction problems.
Obviously there is a direct link with erectile dysfunction and smoking. What is the reason for this enormous impact on a man’s sexual life and abilities?
There are two known causes that link smoking and erectile problems and its ill-affects together. The first has to do with a plaquing of the arteries (arteriosclerosis). Smoking is believed to damage artery lining which later forms plaques in response to this trauma. These plaques build up over time and inhibit blood flow, leading to poor circulation. Poor circulation affects penile erections, as the penis utilizes hemodynamics (mechanism of blood flow) in order to create an erection.
It is also believed that the toxins in cigarette smoke damage the very smallest arteries and veins in the tissues. Damage to these important arterio-venous systems will also impede in creating an erection.
The good news is that all of this can be prevented. The best thing to do is to stop smoking, obviously. Apparently, it will affect most men’s abilities to create and maintain an erection for their entire lives. Don’t risk affecting your performance for the rest of your life. Not only does it impact your erectile abilities, but smoking also plays havoc with sperm and lowers a man’s sperm count, too. The best time to stop is as soon as possible, as the longer you smoke, the more at risk you are in compromising your sexual system and sexual abilities.
