Treatment: An oxygen chamber could be used to help prostate cancer patients
An oxygen chamber traditionally used by divers could help prostate cancer patients avoid erectile dysfunction.
Many men with the cancer now undergo radical prostatectomy, where the prostate gland is removed. But a common side effect is erectile dysfunction (ED) caused by accidental damage to tissue and nerves during surgery.
This means the tissue in this area doesn’t get enough oxygen, raising the risk of ED.
Now, in a U.S. trial in Connecticut, patients are having treatment in an oxygen chamber which mimics the conditions of being 40ft below sea level.
There they are exposed to oxygen at a far higher pressure than normal, forcing greater amounts of oxygen into the tissue. Some men will have up to ten sessions and a control group will be exposed to an everyday level of oxygen.
